Website invites people to rate “green advertising” claims

Anyone can now post an ad on a new website called Greenwashing Index

www.greenwashingindex.com

But just because an ad is posted doesn’t mean it’s misleading: it could be an example of a great ad. Valerie Davis, CEO of site cofounder EnviroMedia says they’re providing a venue that “educates consumers on what to look for in green ads and an easy mechanism for evaluating them.”

This site is one of many that are depending on user-based content, another trend that’s been growing. And while print and TV ads for large, international companies will be the ones most often posted on this site (many already are) the site does a good job of educating those who are considering posting ads.

The rating is based on five criteria, based on if the ad:

- misleads with words

- misleads with visuals

- makes a claim that’s vague or seemingly unprovable

- overstates or exaggerates how green the product/service/ company is, and

- leaves out important information making the claims sound better than it really is

Oberlin College continues being first

Did you know it was the first American college to admit African-American students and women? Today they continue to practice what they preach. Their Environmental Studies building is 100% solar and the campus has just been rated by the Sierra Club as the greenest in
the U.S.
